Paper Art Award

International Prize for Fine Paper Art Awarded for the Second Time

Events

For the second time, outstanding works by international artists were honored with the Paper Art Award at the Paper Positions Berlin, fair for paper art. For the first time, two artists received the bronze award.

The opening day of the sixth edition of Paper Positions Berlin came to a successful conclusion on April 28, 2022 with the presentation of the Paper Art Award. This year, the jury honored the high quality of the represented positions of contemporary fine art on paper in a special way. For the first time, the art prize for sculptural paper art, which is endowed with a total of €36,000, was awarded to four artists.

The jury awarded the gold award to Afshan Daneshvar, represented by the O Gallery in Tehran, for her outstanding work in the “Boats series”. The artist has been dealing intensively with the medium of paper since 2015. Like a textile, she strings together tiny, folded, intact and deformed paper boats in a sea of ??black, which can be read as a commentary on current events and thus have a deep emotional effect.

Goekhan Erdogan, represented by Galerie Heike Strelow in Frankfurt am Main, received silver. The Frankfurt artist is known for his sculptural approach to paper. His work is determined by dealing with his own portrait photo, which he often prints on paper, which he transforms with manual processing, sometimes to the point of complete dissolution.

This year, the bronze award is shared by Aja von Loeper, represented by the Wichtendahl Gallery in Berlin, and Lisa Tiemann, represented by the Schwarz Contemporary gallery, which is also based in Berlin. The position of Aja von Loeper, who works in Nuremberg, convinced the jury with the impressive play of light and textures that the artist wrested from the paper fibers in her "White Sheets" with powerful and careful mechanical processing. The jury saw a comparable artistic strength in the expansive sculptures by Lisa Tiemann, who works in Berlin. In her series of works “Couples”, she explores the limits of materiality and stability through the fusion of ceramics and paper.

About the Paper Art Award

The Paper Art Award has been presented annually at the Paper Positions Berlin art fair since 2021. It was brought to life by the Fine Art-Print Manufaktur d'mage, the artist paper manufacturer Hahnemühle and Canon Germany. With the award, the three partners honor first-class artistic positions that deal with the material paper in an outstanding, stimulating and independent way. A specialist jury made up of gallery owners, artists and guest jurors from the world of culture selects the winners. The award-winning works are purchased by the Haus des Papiers, the world's first museum exclusively for contemporary fine art on paper. In this way, the collection of this unique paper art museum offers a platform for established as well as up-and-coming artists and is also dedicated with great respect to all technical and artistic skills of the trades around the material paper.
