Koehler Paper and Mühle-Glashütte

Sustainability and Premium? Works out!

Packaging

The "sustainable watch packaging" project of the two family companies Koehler Paper and Mühle-Glashütte focuses on the development of a high-quality and at the same time sustainable packaging for a luxurious watch - characteristics that were previously difficult to reconcile in customer communication.

Luxury does not exclude sustainability

Koehler Paper initiated the idea of ??an ecological luxury packaging made of 100% recycled paper that fits a high-quality watch. The family company Mühle-Glashütte, known for its high-quality mechanical wristwatches and nautical instruments, was won as a cooperation partner. Sustainability and recyclability are the central requirements for the packaging that Koehler is developing together with Mühle-Glashütte and other project participants. For the watch manufacturer, the implementation of a sustainable packaging solution is a self-commitment and an important step into the future. Udo Hollbach, Managing Director of Koehler Paper at the Greiz site, states: “The trend in the choice of packaging is clear: paper scores points everywhere and is becoming increasingly important in consumer decisions.”

Recycled papers from Koehler Paper enable sustainable packaging solutions

The recycled papers from Koehler Paper made from 100% secondary fibers not only impress with the “Blue Angel” environmental label or the EU Ecolabel, but above all with their quality and natural feel. They represent a sustainable alternative in luxury packaging without compromising on quality, safety and appearance. The project underscores this message. Four creative agencies are currently involved in the pioneering project by Koehler Paper and Mühle-Glashütte. At the Print & Digital Convention in Düsseldorf, interested parties could marvel at the mock-ups of the sustainable packaging solution. In addition, two lectures on the project were offered at the congress, at which the respective speakers gave insights into the project.

Watchmaking at the highest level

The Saxon watch manufacturer Mühle-Glashütte embodies the highest German art of watchmaking. The company's history dates back to 1869. At that time, Robert Mühle founded a precision engineering workshop in Glashütte, which initially manufactured extremely precise measuring instruments for the Glashütte watch manufacturers. Today, Mühle-Glashütte also manufactures the precise timepieces itself, making it the only watch manufacturer in Glashütte that is still in the hands of a family with roots in the area. Many components that are important for the precision of the movements are newly developed and manufactured in-house - such as the patented, particularly shock-proof woodpecker neck fine adjustment. The watches created in Glashütte skilfully combine traditional craftsmanship with the most modern production methods. Thilo Mühle, Managing Director at Mühle-Glashütte, emphasizes: “The cooperation project with Koehler Paper makes it clear that luxury no longer has to be a sin. In addition, the craftsmanship of two traditional family businesses is combined here. This is reflected in the result.”
