Dear readers!
The aftermath of drupa naturally includes some obligatory celebratory reports from various companies - mostly full of phrases instead facts and therefore put out there more for some sort of visual purposes. Expectations exceeded, sheer enthusiasm, record sales (of course – that ship wasn’t sailing before at all). So be it. It was noticeable though that several of these messages arrived rather late and sounded quite reserved, not to say forced. “We somehow have to write something that reads well ...”
165,551 visitors, 1,616 exhibitors (FKM-certified figures, as of the end of July 2024). That's nothing to be ashamed of. Nevertheless, we looked into the archives and used the figures from the last drupa in 2016 for comparison. Accordingly, in 2024 there was a decline in visitor numbers by 36% (!) and a decline in exhibitors of just over 11%. If you compare it with previous drupas, the figures get worse soon.
Of course, there are a number of reasons - from reluctance to invest in the face of difficult economic conditions, to the uncertain global political situation and the energy and raw material problems, to the undeniable shrinkage of the paper and printing industry in the digital age - whether you want to admit it or not.
The bottom line is that drupa – despite the excellent work of all involved! – can no longer provide answers to all the questions asked. That reduces its appeal. Those responsible are now required to develop new concepts and adapt to the changes in the industry. There will probably be no room for an event of this duration, size and (not least!) intensive cost structure in 2028.
Have a great read & stay safe!
